During these tight economic times, the need for financial assistance has grown to the point that it's easy to deplete our Fellowship Fund. The Fellowship Fund allows us to make contributions to the Religious Coalition in order to help the community with basic necessities such as utilities, rent, emergency medical needs, prescriptions, etc. We have helped eight families this Thanksgiving, with gift cards towards the purchase of Thanksgiving dinner. Thank you for your generosity to the Fellowship Fund.

Knowing Jesus: A Conversation - First Baptist Church

"Jesus was a first-century Jew who, after his crucifixion and resurrection, came to be understood as also being God incarnate." This sentence describes the rich complexity involved in coming to grips with the person of Jesus. He lived in Judea in the first century. As were thousands of other Jews in the Roman occupation, he was crucified, yet he was undoubtedly the only one to be handed over to the Romans by the Jewish leaders, and certainly the only one to come back to life. He was misunderstood by most of his contemporaries, including his own disciples, yet after his resurrection these same disciples understood that he was more than just a man anointed by God; he was somehow God Himself.

Yet many have reduced Jesus to a teacher of timeless truths to make their lives easier, or someone who came to just give a list of things to do or believe in order to go to heaven after death. Others, confounded by the complexity, have essentially ignored Jesus, accepting his death for the forgiveness of their sins but looking to Paul's epistles for their understanding of Christianity.

You are invited to come explore "the author and perfecter of our faith" with Pastor Larry and others who are interested in this quest on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m.

No class this week; resumes on December 3rd.

Pastor's Notes - First Baptist Church

My parents had three sons, and two of us are left-handed. Neither of my parents are left-handed, so what are the odds that their first two sons would be left-handed? Somewhere between 90-93% of people are right-handed, so the odds have got to be extraordinarily small. Yet here we are.

Hand orientation can be detected in unborn children by observing which hand is predominantly licked or held close to the mouth, indicating that hand orientation is genetic or at least influenced by prenatal factors. Researchers have located one gene that seems to be linked to a tendency toward left-handedness. Some researchers think that high levels of testosterone in the womb can lead to left-handedness.

See? Real men are left-handed.

Most left-handed people do some activities right-handed, and many show some forms of ambidexterity. For instance, when I play racket sports such as tennis or racketball, I feel comfortable holding the racket in either hand.

I'm equally bad no matter which hand I use.

OK, maybe that's a bad example.

But being left-handed in a right-handed world forces us to learn how to do some things right-handed just to make it. I'll bet you never realized that all cameras are right-handed. All the main controls are on the right side; there are no cameras made with the controls on the left side. Same with video cameras. So we learn to take pictures right-handed, and the videos of our kids are a little more shaky than if we could use our dominant hand.

Since most of the people who teach us to do things are right-handed, then especially in those things we learn to do by imitation, we'll do those things right-handed.

My brother and I both play the guitar right-handed. That was probably forced on us because, though they make left-handed guitars, they have to be special-ordered. (Because of the bracing of an acoustic guitar, it's not just a matter of reversing the strings. Putting heavier strings where the bracing is designed for lighter strings will eventually result in cracking the guitar top.) Bill Kelley just turns the guitar upside-down and fingers everything in reverse, but most left-handers just play it like everyone else. It probably helps us since our more dominant hand is doing the more complicated work on the fretboard.

Now, what's interesting about my brother and me is that everything he does right-handed, I do right-handed. He throws left-handed but bats right-handed; so do I. He kicks with his right foot; so do I. (Yes, being left-handed generally, but not always, means you are also going to be left-footed or, more accurately, left-sided.) In my adult years this has caused me to wonder whether I'm naturally left-handed or whether I became so by imitating Mickey, who is 2½ years older. When I was little I always admired Mickey and wanted to be just like him. I still have the baseball glove that he used in Little League in Alabama; it got passed down to me, and I even used it playing intramural softball in college. Hand-me-down clothes never bothered me when I was little because I got to wear Mickey's clothes. Maybe we both bat right-handed because Dad didn't know how to teach his left-handed sons how to bat left-handed, but it's not out of the question that even as a toddler I was striving to be just like my older brother in every way, so if he did something left-handed, then that's what I did, and if he did it right-handed, so did I.

Such is the power of influence, particularly with little kids. They watch, they imitate, they listen, they learn. As independent as each child is, they are not predominantly so. None of us are. We are influenced by others, and everything we do, everything we say, influences others for good or for bad.

I wish Christians would get this, especially those who make it on the news or get interviewed by Larry King. They often say things that are so backward, so hurtful to people who don't fit their definition of living or believing right. You get the feeling that they are trying to force everyone to be "right-handed." Wouldn't the world be easier if everyone was "right-handed"? Maybe. But it's not; and we as Christians, whom Paul called "a peculiar people," should be the last ones to insist that it should be.

I like being left-handed. It makes the world more interesting. And if I'm left-handed because I admired my older brother and wanted to be just like him, well, that's kinda cool too.

Children's Christmas Choirs

During the month of November the children from 4 years old to 5th grade will be practicing two songs for the "Imagine Christmas" performance. The practices will be led by Ann Jester and Jamie Halley and will be during the Mustard Seed and Mustard Seedlings programs and on Wednesday nights from 6-6:30 p.m. If your child is from 4 years old to 5th grade and would like to participate in the Christmas program, please plan to have them attend these practice sessions.

On November 12th our Mission Friends and CiA kids all participated in a really great program called Operation Christmas Child. The children spent the evening filling shoeboxes with toys, school supplies, and hygiene products for children all around the world. We filled a total of 11 boxes and took in enough donations to send the boxes. Thank you to all the people who supported this important ministry to the poorest children in our world. Giving them a simple gift reminds them that there are people in this world that care for them and are thinking of them.

Thank you!

Upcoming Events

November 26th—No Wednesday Night Activities for children

December 19th—Couple's Night Out

We would like to publish the names, e-mail addresses and mailing addresses of these individuals so that our church family may pray for them by name and perhaps provide a source of encouragement through contacting them. Please include their current status when providing the information and send it to the church office or e-mail Sonia Gadra.

CentrePointe counselors work with individuals, couples, and families to improve relationships, deal with emotional and spiritual struggles, negotiate life transitions, and find meaning from the center of one\'s life. As pastoral counselors, we believe that there is an important spiritual dimension that people bring to the counseling process that should not be minimized. We believe in the care of the soul. At the same time, we believe that it is important not to ignore scientific advances in the understanding of biological and psychological human functioning. Healthy spirituality and healthy human functioning go hand in hand. Areas of expertise include:

• Spiritual and religious problems• Pre-marital counseling• Anger management• Stress management• Depression• Family therapy• Anxiety• Couples counseling• Abuse• Eating disorders• Addictions• Sexual disorders and compulsivity• Career transitions• Loss and grief• Childhood and adolescent issues• Conflict mediation

Water for Christmas - Home

There is a movement that is starting to spread. People--normal people like you and me--are sacrificing receiving Christmas gifts and are asking friends and loved ones to give them water instead.

The lack of access to clean water is the leading cause of death in underdeveloped countries. Every day, 4,500 children die of water-related diseases. And in the ground right under their feet, rivers of life flow.

Unacceptable.

$10 billion will provide everyone in the world with clean drinking water. Americans will spend over $450 billion this holiday season.

So I'm telling everyone, "I want water for Christmas." I warned my mom, "Don't try to sneak a pair of socks to me at Christmas." I can get socks any time of the year; I want water for Christmas.

This is not an official church activity; it's my deal. It's personal. But if you want to join me, Jody and Andy Landers, and a growing number of people in saying, "I want Water for Christmas," then go to my blog, "While My Muse Gently Weeps", and learn more. And decide how you want to get involved.

Because we aren't going for one well. We're going for the $10 billion.

Mustard Seed is the Children's worship time on Sundays from 11:15–12:30. Jesus described the church as a mustard seed: "The smallest of seeds that grows into the largest of plants." At the Mustard Seed Co., our goal is to help children grow in Jesus Christ. Every Sunday morning we dive into God's Word through songs, games, and teaching designed just for kids. If you are in 1st through fourth grade, come join us so we can grow together.

Living a Fully-Engaged Life: - 2006

"We walk around with day planners and to-do lists, Palm Pilots and BlackBerries, instant pagers and pop-up reminders on our computers--all designed to help us manage our time better. We use words like obsessed, crazed and overwhelmed not to describe insanity, but instead to characterize our everyday lives. Feeling forever starved for time, we assume that we have no choice but to cram as much as possible into every day."

I remember reading these words from The Power of Full Engagement by Jim Loehr and Tony Scwartz and thinking, "Yep, they've got it right. That describes most of the people I know in Frederick County, including me. I wonder if they have anything new to say? As I read the book, I realized that, though it may be new to many, their solution is in fact very old--as old as creation itself. In fact, it is described in the first chapters of Genesis. I dubbed it "The Sabbath Principle", and this series will examine how the Sabbath Principle affects every area of our life. ~Pastor Larry~

Hi! Thanks for checking out our website. We are really excited about what God is doing at our church, and we hope some of that comes through. You can find a lot of information about our church on this site, but if you really want to see what God is doing at First Baptist Church, you need to come check it out for yourself. Talk to some of our people and let them tell you about their lives since they began following Jesus.

We want to make a positive contribution to the quality of life in our community. Frederick County today is very similar to the Montgomery County in which I was raised: growing population, long commutes, lots of construction, overcrowded schools, tons of excitement. I love it!

More than anything, Frederick County is about people--lots and lots of people, and more coming every day. People who live hectic lives in which God often gets squeezed out. People who grew up attending church and getting bored out of their brains.

Well, life in Christ is anything but boring--it's the most exciting, most satisfying thing a person can experience, and I want everybody to experience it! I believe God has called me to lead a church that is exciting and fun and, more than anything, one that connects people with God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

If you are looking for a perfect church, you won't find it at First Baptist. But if you are looking for a church that is full of imperfect people trying to reach their full potential in Christ, we just might be the place for you. We haven't arrived yet, but I think we're headed in the right direction, and we're having a blast along the way.

So take a look around. If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

Dr. Larry Eubanks, Senior Pastor

Richard Krauss - Student Pastor

"My name is Richard Krauss." If you had asked me four days ago what I would be doing on this grim snowy day in January, I would have perhaps said, "building a snowman or toasting marshmallows." Never in my wildest nightmares would I have dreamed that I would be sitting here doing what I'm doing now! Then she showed up and told me there was a job to be done and only I could do it; what was even worse is she told me the clock was ticking...

Sounds exciting, doesn't it? Well it's not far from the truth. What really happened is Marcie (Creative Arts Director) told me I better get my bio done for the church website, or else!

Hi! I'm Richard and I am the Minister to Students and their families here at First Baptist. I was born and raised in Maryland, then moved down south when I was 18 (swearing to never return) but God had other plans. My wife Becky, my son Tim and I returned to Maryland in 1998 to serve at First Baptist and it's been an adventure ever since. Fortunately that's the way Becky and I like it. As for Tim? Well, let's just say he is stuck with us for a while.

I believe Student Ministry should be God centered, fun and risky. God asks us to live boldly for Him and that is what we attempt to accomplish with our student ministry. We are constantly striving to seek God's will through ministry, missions, prayer and the study of His Word. We never stop looking for different ways to tell the world "God loves you" and (not surprisingly) we make a lot of mistakes on this journey. The fun comes in seeking God's grace and strength to continue the journey together. I hope you join us in the Great Adventure God has planned for us.

I was born to show business parents in Las Vegas. I guess you could say that the arts are in my blood. My father was a professional dancer, singer and actor and my mother was a professional dancer as well. I was raised in church after my parents came to faith in Christ and later I trusted Christ also. We moved all over the country but lived in Canton, Ohio when I was a teen and I married my high school sweetheart, Chip, at that time. (He's the good looking one who leads worship) Our adventure took us to Bible College in Springfield, MO and then to serve in churches in the Chicago area, upstate New York, Wichita, KS and Pekin, IL. We have three grown sons and four wonderful grandchildren. I love all things aesthtic and am drawn to color, texture, imagery, music, dance and drama, just to name a few.

Art has the power to touch us in profound ways. The story of God begs for life through music, image, drama, and movement. Connections are made through the heart, not just the head. We step into the story and embrace our part in it, celebrating and sharing its life giving joy with others. I love serving this wonderful church and am always excited to see how God uses the arts through us for His glory!

Music has always been part of my life. I was blessed to live in an area that placed a high priority on music in the schools (as should every school...but don’t get me started on that one!!!) I was in junior high choir, high school a cappella choir, high school Broadway style musicals, the Northeast Ohio Opera Group and I even played guitar in a garage band. I met my best friend in high school choir and I married her (she is the gorgeous girl whose picture is just above mine) and we now have the privilege of serving together.

After attending Bible College and serving in two churches in the 70s and 80s God led us to Wichita, Kansas. It was a time in my life when I was searching about where to serve the Lord—should I continue in vocational ministry, or should I serve Him in the public school system as a music teacher? I decided to finish my music education degrees, so, with Marcie’s blessing and encouragement, I attended Friends University and later graduate school at Wichita State University. God used this time to strengthen my desire to serve Him in the church and to reconfirm my belief that the church is the hope of the world.

Marcie and I moved to Frederick in the fall of 2005 and we love it!! In the traditional service I love the organ accompanied hymns and the choir. In the contemporary service I get to strap on my guitar and lead with another gifted team of vocalists and instrumentalists (a long way from that garage band). We used to wonder if we could ever find a church where we would fit with our passion for both traditional and contemporary worship. We found it!!

Yes, I’m passionate about music but I’m even more passionate about worship.
Worship is all about giving glory to the God who made us and redeemed us through Jesus. Worship should be part of our everyday lives. On Sunday, we gather for corporate worship and our desire is that we will praise Him in music, prayer, giving, and allowing the spoken Word to change us. I hope you’ll explore one of our services soon and join us in our journey of worship!

Meet New Friends - Why We Exist

But the Christian life is not a solitary life. Solitude may be a necessary part of the Christian life, but Jesus came to create an authentic Christian community that would spread throughout the world, not just to save a bunch of unconnected individuals. At First Baptist Church we therefore place a high priority on relationships and building a sense of real community.

Though we are a large and growing church, the center of our church's life is the small group, where we can develop deep and lasting friendships with others on the Christian journey. Small groups are held on Sunday mornings in what is traditionally called Sunday School, or during the week in member's homes. Regardless of the setting, the emphasis is on a group of people doing life together.

What is Catalyst Student Ministries? - Catalyst Student Ministry

A catalyst is an ingredient that helps things change. Yeast is a great example of a catalyst--it makes bread rise, and it helps to turn grains into beer. (OOPS! Did I say beer on a church web site?) Beer may not be the best example, but it makes the point (and helps me keep your attention!).

We students at First Baptist believe that Jesus is our Catalyst. He is constantly changing us (if we let him) and helping us to become more like Him. As we become more like Him, we begin to change the world. That's why we call our student ministry Catalyst.

Our goal is nothing less than to allow Jesus to change us and then use us to change the world. If your life needs a change come check us out on Wednesday nights at 6:30 or Sunday mornings at 9:45.Click Here For A Current Calendar of Events

"Scarlet Letters: What Jesus Said" - 2007

In June, 1899, Louis Klopsch, who was editor of the British weekly magazine The Christian Herald, read these words from Luke 22:20: "This cup is the new testament in my blood, which I shed for you." Seizing upon the symbolism of blood, Klopsch asked his pastor, Dr. T. Dewitt Talmage, if Christ's words could not be printed in red. His mentor replied: "It could do no harm and it most certainly could do much good." The following year Klopsch published the first red-letter New Testament, and since then millions of Christians have read the words of Jesus in scarlet.

We pay a lot of attention to what a lot of people say regarding Christianity. Certain Christians are called on by the secular media to represent the Christian stance on any number of issues, and some accept what they say as "The Christian Position." But what did Jesus talk about? And what didn't he talk about? What was important to him? Seems to me that if we are going to call ourselves followers of Jesus, we better understand as best as we can what he actually did say.

Beginning June 3rd, we are going to concentrate on the red-letters in the Bible. Join us each week as we hear and follow our Savior's voice.journey with us!
